Dr. Melissa Crum is an artist, author, researcher, and owner of Mosaic Education Network, LLC. Mosaic Education Network is a consulting company that helps educators and non-profit leaders build stronger relationships with the diverse communities they serve by infusing the arts, story-telling, and critical thinking into professional development, community building and curriculum development. The goal is for participants have alternative ways to conceptualize themselves, their future and a diverse world. Dr. Crum earned her Bachelors in Visual Art Studies from the University of Florida, her Masters' in African American and African Studies and her PhD in Art Administration, Education and Policy from The Ohio State University. She has conducted professional development trainings, given presentations and facilitated projects across the United States and internationally including Ghana and Brazil. In May of 2015, Dr. Crum was nominated to give a TEDx talk “A Tale of Two Teachers” on an arts-based professional development process called multicultural critical reflective practice (MCRP) which she co-created and published. She continues to shape her own professional development through a variety of opportunities. She participated in YWCA's Chase Gen Y Leadership Project and The United Way's Project Diversity for non-profit board develpment. She worked with the The Ohio State University and The Royal Shakespeare Company in the United Kingdom to learn how to increase students' reading comprehension through theater-based practices. As an Imagining America Fellow she worked with artists, scholars, and community organizers across the country to expand the role of art and public scholarship in higher education. As an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, she worked with thirteen 8th grades, a social studies teacher, and number community members to create the Linden Documentary Project. Students created research questions and facilitated interviews with community professionals to learn about the history of their neighborhood. Watch the students' work here:
